Understanding Your Award

Your eligibility for aid will be communicated via a Financial Aid Notification (FAN), which will be posted under Finances and Jobs on MyUCLA. This portal also includes the Document Tracking Page. Here you can verify if your application has been received, and if more supporting documentation is required before your aid can be determined.

Academic year notifications begin mid-July.
Summer award notices come at the end of May.
For more information about Summer Aid visit the Summer Aid Information Website.

Additional time may be required to generate a FAN for students who have been selected for verification, or those who are waiting for an appeal to be reviewed. If you have any questions about the status of your file or FAN notification of eligibility, please contact our office.

This video tutorial will walk you through your FAN step-by-step and answer most of the common questions students have.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am expecting to receive outside scholarships. How will these affect my financial aid?

Your financial aid may need to be revised when you receive outside scholarships. It is our policy to replace your need-based loans and work-study first. If the amount of outside aid exceeds the amount of loan and work in your award, your grant aid could be reduced.

How do I report outside assistance?

You can report outside support on your FAN, or send us a letter, fax or a message via MyUCLA. Please let us know how much you are receiving in outside support AND the source of the award(s). Once we review the information, we will generate a new financial aid notification (FAN). You can review this on MyUCLA.

Will my financial aid package cover my non-resident fees?

UCLA does NOT provide grant aid to cover Nonresident Supplementation Tuition. You may be able to access FEDERAL PARENT PLUS and/or Private Loans to cover this expense.

If I am a non-resident student, can I appeal to be assessed California Resident tuition?

At UCLA, the Registrar’s Office determines your residence status. You can find additional information on the Registrar's website.

My family’s financial circumstances have changed since we applied for aid. Can UCLA take these changes into consideration?

Yes. If your (or your family’s) financial situation has changed after you applied (or at any time during the academic year) you can submit a letter of appeal to Financial Aid and Scholarships. Find more information on our Appeals page.

If I am receiving financial aid, will my housing be covered automatically?

Your financial aid (grant and loan assistance) budget includes housing and meal allowances. Starting in Fall of 2022 financial aid will pay for your housing after it pays for your tuition and fees. UCLA Housing Services has a payment plan designed for financial aid recipients. This will allow you to defer making your housing payments until financial aid refunds are released. For information about installment plans visit the UCLA Housing website.

If I am receiving financial aid, do I need to pay tuition when I receive my bill?

If your financial aid covers the full cost of your tuition and fees, you will NOT need to make a payment. Financial aid will be disbursed as early as 10 days before the start date of each quarter. Fee payment deadlines are extended for financial aid recipients. You can find additional information under Disbursements/Bills/Refunds.

Does UCLA have an installment payment plan for tuition and housing?

UCLA Bruin Pay Plan (BPP) allows you to pay your tuition in 3 MONTHLY PAYMENTS throughout each quarter. This is a great option for students who are not receiving full financial aid to cover their fees. If you are eligible for BPP, information will be presented to you on MyUCLA. You can find more information about the Bruin Pay Plan here.
